All Sorts of Greenery

Hello all you Correlationers!

Apparently, there’s a book by Paul Dickson where he documents 2,985 synonyms for various states of intoxication (this book). That’s a little much for our taste! Plus, we wonder how many words are just very subtle variations of each other. “Money” has a decent amount of synonyms (85 according to Merriam-Webster). Some of these are straight forward, like “cash”, but there are a good amount of slang words like bacon, dough, moola, scratch, cabbage, and dead presidents. There’s a list of “100 Slang Words for Money and How They were Coined” (we’re assuming pun intended). There’s a decent amount of food based slang, especially green based foods but we wondered if there were any other links. Well think no longer because a wad of bills looking like cabbage leaves isn’t the only thing linking it to money! That’s right, the hourly total compensation cost of labor in the USA and the per capita availability of cabbage is -87% correlated from 2004 to 2019! Maybe this means people are actually being paid with wads of cabbage instead of bills since the relationship is negative!
